About the Role
Humana is looking for an experienced Product Owner to serve as a lead within our agile delivery teams. You’ll be the bridge between business stakeholders and technology teams, translating business needs into clear, prioritized, technically sound work. You’ll own the backlog for your product area, guide less-experienced Product Owners, and make sure delivery stays aligned with strategy and measurable outcomes.
This role is focused on business and technical product ownership rather than UI/UX design.
Key Responsibilities
Backlog ownership and delivery
- Own, maintain, and prioritize the product backlog in Azure DevOps (ADO) based on business value, risk, dependencies, and technical constraints
- Write clear epics, features, and user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria
- Lead backlog refinement, sprint planning, and PI planning activities with engineering teams
- Accept or reject completed work against the definition of done
- Serve as the daily point of contact for the team on scope, requirements, and priority decisions
Business and technology partnership
- Engage directly with business leaders and subject matter experts to understand needs, processes, and desired outcomes
- Translate business requirements into technical requirements the engineering team can act on, and explain technical trade-offs back to business partners in plain language
- Facilitate working sessions between business and technology to resolve ambiguity, dependencies, and competing priorities
- Document current- and future-state processes, workflows, and system interactions using Lucidchart
Portfolio alignment and planning
- Align team backlogs to portfolio objectives, roadmaps, and OKRs using Jira Align
- Participate in quarterly/PI planning, including capacity planning, dependency mapping, and risk identification
- Track and report on progress, KPIs, and success metrics for your product area
- Communicate status, risks, and trade-offs transparently to stakeholders and leadership
Leadership
- Act as a lead among Product Owners: mentor others, share best practices, and help drive consistent backlog and story quality
- Influence without formal authority across business, technology, and delivery teams
- Participate in retrospectives and drive continuous improvement in team and cross-team processes
Required Qualifications
- 4 to 7 years of experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, Business Analyst, or in a similar role in an agile environment
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both business stakeholders and technical teams, including engineers, architects, and data teams
- Strong working knowledge of Agile/Scrum and scaled agile practices (SAFe)
- Hands-on experience managing backlogs in Azure DevOps (ADO)
- Experience with Jira Align for portfolio, program, or roadmap alignment
- Experience using Lucidchart (or similar) to create process flows, system diagrams, and requirements documentation
- Proven ability to write clear, testable user stories and acceptance criteria
- Strong prioritization, facilitation, and decision-making skills
· Comfortable working with data to measure product performance and inform priorities
· Experience in healthcare, health insurance, or another regulated industry (e.g., Medicare Advantage, claims, member or provider experience)
- Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), PSPO, SAFe POPM, or equivalent certification
- Understanding of APIs, integrations, data flows, and software architecture concepts
- Experience mentoring or leading other Product Owners or analysts
- Bachelor’s degree in business, information systems, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Key Competencies
- Strong communicator who can “speak both languages,” business and technology
- Outcome-focused, with a clear line of sight from backlog items to business value
- Leadership and influence across teams without formal authority
- Structured thinker who can bring clarity to complex or ambiguous problems
- Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable in a large, matrixed organization
