Cassandra Data Modeler role with 14 years of experience, the focus shifts from basic schema design to high level distributed systems architecture, performance engineering, and strategic scalability. At this seniority level, the candidate is expected to design models that handle “crores of records” while maintaining low latency performance across multiple data centers.
Core Strategic Skills
- Query Driven Design Expertise: Proficiency in the “application first” modeling approach, where tables are designed specifically to support defined access patterns rather than entities.
- Distributed Architecture Mastery: Deep understanding of Cassandra's peer to peer architecture, including how partition keys drive data distribution across nodes to avoid hotspots.
- Tunable Consistency & Tradeoffs: Expertise in balancing the CAP theorem (Availability vs. Consistency) and configuring consistency levels (e.g., LOCAL_QUORUM, EACH_QUORUM) for specific business requirements.
- Relational to NoSQL Transformation: Significant experience migrating from RDBMS (Oracle, MySQL) to Cassandra, including the heavy use of denormalization to replace traditional joins.
Advanced Modeling & Optimization
- Partition Management: Ability to design for massive scale by avoiding “unbounded partitions”‿crucial for time series data to ensure efficient streaming, repair, and pagination.
- Advanced Data Structures: Skilled use of Collections (Maps, Sets, Lists), Materialized Views for alternate data representations, and Secondary Indexes where appropriate for query flexibility.
