Azure Migration (Lift & Shift / Replatform)
Location: Fully Remote
Duration: 6-12 months
Role Overview
Lead end-to-end on‑premises to Azure migration programs—including lift-and-shift and replatforming—across infrastructure, applications, network, databases (MS SQL), and storage. You will own program governance, technical delivery, stakeholder communication, and risk management while driving teams to successful cutover and post‑migration stabilization.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Governance
- Own end-to-end migration program plan, scope, timelines, budget, and deliverables.
- Establish PMO practices, RAID (Risks, Assumptions, Issues, Dependencies) logs, and communication cadences.
- Drive executive and customer stakeholder alignment—steering committees, status reports, and decision logs.
Technical Delivery & Architecture Oversight
- Define migration strategy: lift‑and‑shift, replatforming (e.g., MS SQL → Azure SQL/Managed Instance), and targeted refactoring.
- Oversee Azure Service Bus adoption (queues/topics/subscriptions), Application Gateway design (WAF/routing/SSL), File services (Azure Files/Storage), VMs/Scale Sets, and networking (VNets, subnets, peering, Private Endpoints).
- Ensure security & compliance: RBAC, Managed Identity, Key Vault, network isolation, policies, and guardrails.
Migration Phases (Pre, During, Post)
- Pre-Migration: discovery, inventory, dependency mapping, right-sizing, landing zone readiness, and pilot planning.
- Migration Execution: coordinate Azure Migrate, ASR, Database Migration Service, cutover windows, rollback plans, and change control.
- Post-Migration (Hypercare): performance tuning, DLQ handling (Service Bus), incident response, optimization, and handover to BAU.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Collaborate with infra, app dev, DBA, security, networking, and operations teams.
- Align CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps), IaC (Terraform/Bicep), and environment promotion (Dev/QA/Staging/Prod).
- Drive testing strategy: functional, performance, DR/backup, failover, and resilience drills.
Reporting & Stakeholder Communication
- Produce program dashboards, migration readiness checklists, cutover plans, and weekly executive summaries.
- Manage third-party vendors, contracts, and SLAs as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 12–15+ years in IT with 5–8+ years leading complex cloud migration programs.
- Strong hands-on understanding of:
- Azure Compute: VMs, Scale Sets
- Networking: VNets, peering, NSGs, Application Gateway (WAF), Private Endpoints
- Storage: Azure Files, Blob Storage, backup/DR
- Databases: MS SQL (on‑prem) → Azure SQL / Managed Instance (DMS, performance, compatibility)
- Integration: Azure Service Bus (queues/topics/subscriptions, DLQ, filters)
- Security & Management: RBAC, Managed Identity, Key Vault, Azure Monitor/Log Analytics
- Migration Tools: Azure Migrate, ASR, Database Migration Service
- Proven leadership of multi-disciplinary teams; excellent stakeholder and customer management.
- Strong documentation, presentation, and executive communication.
- Preferred Certifications: AZ‑305 (Solutions Architect), AZ‑104 (Administrator), AZ‑400 (DevOps), PMP/PRINCE2, ITIL.
Key Deliverables
- Discovery/inventory & migration strategy document (workload-by-workload).
- Detailed project plan with milestones, cutover windows, and rollback steps.
- Architecture & design for Service Bus, Application Gateway, SQL target, storage.
- Runbooks: cutover, DR, incident response, DLQ triage/replay (Service Bus).
- Testing & validation reports (performance, resilience, security).
- Hypercare plan and BAU handover package.
Project Milestones
- Assessment & Readiness – inventory, dependency mapping, landing zone validation.
- Design & Planning – target architecture, sequencing, risk & rollback.
- Pilot / POC – selected workloads, benchmarks, lessons learned.
- Build & Configure – infra/app/network/DB setup; IaC & pipelines.
- Migration & Cutover – staged waves, verification, production sign-off.
- Hypercare – stabilization, tuning, backlog resolution.
- Handover – support transition, documentation, acceptance.
KPIs & Success Metrics
- On-time delivery of migration waves; budget adherence ≤ variance.
- Zero Sev‑1 incidents during cutover; MTTR within target (e.g., ≤60 min).
- Performance parity or better post-migration (CPU/mem/IO/latency).
- Operational readiness: runbooks approved; monitoring & alerting in place.
- Stakeholder satisfaction (CSAT/NPS) meeting/exceeding targets.
