Mainframe CICS & MQSeries Engineer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe CICS & MQSeries Engineer to support, maintain, and optimize IBM CICS and MQSeries environments on z/OS. This role involves installation, maintenance, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and providing technical leadership in a mission-critical mainframe environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on expertise with CICS, MQSeries, z/OS system utilities, and related middleware, along with the ability to mentor staff, support applications, and ensure system reliability, security, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

CICS & MQSeries System Support

• Install and maintain IBM CICS, MQSeries, and supporting products using vendor-recommended tools and procedures.

• Perform ongoing system maintenance, upgrades, and patching in accordance with best practices.

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues including:

  • Application contention

  • Program loops

  • Storage shortages

  • MQ messages not reaching destinations

  • MQ Channels not starting

  • Full MQ page sets

• Provide application-level support for CICS table updates, code rollouts, and usage best practices.

Performance & Optimization

• Monitor and optimize CICS and MQSeries performance, ensuring efficient CPU and I/O utilization.

• Analyze transaction throughput and MQ message performance.

• Tune systems to improve stability, scalability, and availability.

Deployment & Change Management

• Test code and configurations to ensure expected results; debug issues as required.

• Support migration of applications from Development to QA to Production environments.

• Provide testing and implementation support for developed and configured components.

• Participate in troubleshooting and resolution of production issues.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to z/OS staff.

• Train designated staff; training support will be provided by the mainframe and production support team.

• Attend and actively participate in meetings and working sessions.

• Lead or contribute to projects according to defined plans and schedules.

Documentation, Security & Compliance

• Produce and maintain technical documentation, standards, and procedures.

• Ensure compliance with security and accessibility policies.

• Support certificate management and security configurations within CICS and MQSeries.

Required & Desired Skills

Technical Skills

• Strong experience with IBM CICS, MQSeries, and z/OS

• Hands-on experience with SMP/E, z/OSMF, JCL, JES2, and Unix System Services (USS)

• Experience installing and maintaining CICS and MQSeries on z/OS

• Ability to manage MQ Channels and Queues using commands and MQ Explorer

• Expertise in resolving CICS issues such as looping tasks and storage shortages

• Knowledge of CICS security and MQSeries security (RACF / ACF2)

• Ability to manage and maintain CICS definitions

• Knowledge of CICSPlex, CICS Transaction Gateway, and analysis of CICS transaction and system dumps
