Job Title: FinOps Engineer
Location: Remote – PST working hours (highly prefer PST candidates)
Department: Cloud Financial Operations
Duration: 6 months (40 hours per week through EOY, 10-15 hours a week next year.)
Overview
We are seeking a FinOps Engineer to drive cloud financial accountability and optimization across engineering and finance teams. This role will be instrumental in implementing cost visibility, automation, and governance practices using tools such as Cloudability and scripting in PowerShell.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate cloud cost reporting, budget alerts, and resource tagging.
Integrate cloud cost management platforms with internal systems to enable real-time cost tracking and forecasting.
Collaborate with engineering and finance teams to establish FinOps accountability structures and optimize commitment-based discounts.
Build dashboards and reporting frameworks to support anomaly detection, KPI tracking, and cost optimization.
Lead initiatives to improve FinOps maturity across the organization, including education and enablement.
Support monthly stakeholder reviews and strategic planning sessions to align cloud spend with business goals.
Required Skills
Strong expertise in PowerShell scripting for automation and cloud resource management.
Hands-on experience with Cloudability or similar cloud cost management platforms.
Solid understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and their billing models.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
Experience with financial modeling and cost forecasting in cloud environments.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for finance and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Microsoft Cost Management, Azure Budgets, and tagging strategies.
Knowledge of FinOps principles and frameworks (e.g., FinOps Foundation Maturity Model).
Background in infrastructure-as-code and automation tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
Prior experience in the utility or energy sector is a plus.
Additional Insights
This role is part of a broader initiative to build a FinOps culture of collaboration, where engineers proactively manage budgets and highlight cost-impacting changes. You’ll work closely with stakeholders across engineering, finance, and operations to ensure cloud investments are aligned with strategic goals.
