Role: Mainframe Storage

Contract
Mainframe Storage Consultant with in-depth expertise in IBM DS8000 series enterprise storage systems and strong proficiency in mainframe tape technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
Storage Architecture & Administration:
Design, implement, and manage IBM DS8000 series storage solutions for z/OS mainframe environments.
Configure and maintain mainframe-attached tape subsystems (e.g., IBM TS7700 Virtual Tape Library, 3490/3590 tape systems).
Manage disk and tape storage allocation, performance tuning, replication, and disaster recovery (DR) readiness.
Monitor storage capacity, utilization trends, and plan for future growth.
Performance & Optimization:
Perform performance tuning of DS8000 and tape environments to ensure optimal throughput and minimal latency.
Troubleshoot I/O bottlenecks and storage connectivity issues.
Optimize HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) and DFSMShsm policies for tape/disk usage efficiency.
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity:
Implement and manage remote mirroring technologies (PPRC, Global Mirror) for DS8000.
Design and test DR plans for both disk and tape systems, ensuring compliance with RTO/RPO objectives.
Participate in DR drills and validate recovery processes.
Security & Compliance:
Enforce storage security policies and RACF/Top Secret/ACF2 controls for dataset and volume access.
Maintain compliance with regulatory and audit requirements for storage data retention, encryption, and access control.
Integration & Automation:
Work with z/OS systems programmers and application teams to integrate storage with mainframe applications.
Develop automation scripts and procedures for storage provisioning, monitoring, and reporting.
Support & Troubleshooting:
Provide L3/L4 support for storage-related incidents and service requests.
Engage with IBM and other vendors for firmware updates, patches, and advanced troubleshooting.
Maintain up-to-date documentation of storage configurations, procedures, and change management records.
Required Skills & Experience:
10+ years of mainframe storage experience, with at least 5+ years in IBM DS8000 administration.
Strong hands-on experience with tape storage technologies (IBM TS7700 VTL, physical tape libraries).
Expert-level knowledge of z/OS storage management tools (DFSMS, ICKDSF, IDCAMS).
Proficiency with replication and disaster recovery solutions (PPRC, Global Mirror, Metro Mirror).
Solid understanding of FICON connectivity and SAN zoning in a mainframe environment.
Experience in performance tuning, capacity planning, and storage lifecycle management.
Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work under pressure on mission-critical issues.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with Cloud-based mainframe storage integration.
Familiarity with RMM (Removable Media Manager), CA-1, or equivalent tape management systems.
Knowledge of automation tools (REXX, CLIST, Python for z/OS).
Experience in regulated industries (banking, insurance, government).
