Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities:

Light Microscopy (LM) Technician will work in close conjunction with the senior LM staff in the VCU Microscopy Shared Resource under the general supervision of the Core Director. The LM Technician will assist the PI and staff with instrument care and maintenance, including optical imaging systems, sectioning instruments, and specified computers. The successful candidate may also assist the PI and staff with day-to-day laboratory maintenance/management, including
ordering, stocking and storage of laboratory supplies, and additional tasks as assigned by the PI or staff.

 

Minimum Hiring Standards:
BS degree in Biological or Biomedical Sciences with 1 year of experience working in a
biological lab environment.
Independent thinker willing to tackle challenging problems.
Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities, meet established
deadlines and recognize new problems with constantly changing priorities and frequent
interruptions.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and
effectively in the work environment.
Ability to diplomatically and professionally interact with all levels of University staff and
external contacts.
Experience in preparation of biological material (cells, tissues etc.) for microscopy imaging.
Knowledge of standard laboratory and safety procedures.
Familiarity with electron and/or light microscopy.
Prior experience using a Zeiss confocal microscopy systems (LSM 880, LSM 710 and LSM 700
EVO-50 and Jeol JEM-1200/1400 desirable.
The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty,
staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards:
Master’s degree in related field
